Why do we crave unhealthy foods? A healthy weight loss diet program often becomes a battleground between our desire to lose weight quickly and cravings for snacks based on unhealthy food choices. We can not be what we eat, but research indicates that we desire the foods that we get used to eating, then you could say that we crave What we eat. If you have created a pattern of eating ice cream for pleasure or when you are under stress, it should come as no surprise that you will have a burning desire for ice cream in the right conditions. Pavlov’s Dog, by any other name, is still Pavlov’s Dog.
But if, in fact, we train ourselves to crave unhealthy snacks or foods, the reverse can also be true: we can train ourselves to crave healthy snacks and foods. If we can do this, a mild-tasting weight loss supplement can become as desirable as sweet bread.
I never wanted coffee until I started drinking it. The same goes for double chocolate ice cream. The taste of coffee and chocolate must be learned through exposure to these foods and their flavors. If people living in more primitive jungle cultures can have a burning desire to snack on crawling insects unique to their habitat, we can certainly develop our own desire for a decent and healthy snack, healthy fast food and healthy food recipe choices when preparing the meals.
So, how can we reprogram ourselves to turn the craving for sweets into something on the list of healthy foods? To quote a phrase from a film, “Build it and they will come.” In that case, if we make a habit of making healthy food choices at mealtime and snack time, we will start wanting those foods instead of the ones we give up on.
There is a lot of pleasure associated with these snacking experiences, and most of us are reluctant to give them up. But if we can replace some simple, healthy foods and snack recipes, we can train our mental and physical taste buds to desire them, and a new association of pleasure will be formed around the new choice or recipe for healthy food.
Recent research has proved this. The results showed that new desires can be formed to replace the old ones, even if the new ones are based on light and healthy foods, and the original ones were the tasty delights proven with fat and sugar. The best news? It may take just a week to do this.
I covered some healthy snack ideas to use to re-train our cravings in another article. (It contains healthy snack ideas that also apply to children.) For now, I’ll give just a few examples of healthy snack substitutions.
If you don’t want such a shock to your taste buds right away, you can make it a two-step process in some cases. For example, when the seemingly uncontrollable craving for chocolate ice cream arrives, have a cup of coffee or a glass of milk chocolate Ovomaltine. Ovomaltine is not like milk-chocolate mixtures addicted to children’s products. Instead, think of it as a healthy fast food snack. It contains vitamins and minerals, and if you use one or two tablespoons instead of the recommended four, do not use too much sugar.
Step two: Buy a good chocolate flavored whey protein mix from your local health food supplier (or the flavor of your choice) and use it instead of Ovomaltine. These protein supplements are nothing like they used to be. In the past, they did NOT mix without a blender and tasted very bad. It’s not like that anymore. They mix quickly by simply stirring or shaking, and the flavors are very good. Trust me.
Now you’ve turned a fat and sugar ice cream binge into a healthy fast food choice: a protein supplement! In addition, it is much more satisfying and satisfying. You won’t be tempted to eat anything as quickly as you would if you had succumbed and eaten ice cream.
Don’t you think this will work? Well, I can guarantee this personally, and tests done on ordinary people like us have proven the same. In fact, it worked when very bland but healthy food recipes and snack substitutes were used instead of the usual tasty treats, and in just one week. In fact, people craved healthy tasteless snacks instead of their old unhealthy treats.
Go ahead and try it. You will have craving for healthy foods and snacks in no time.
